John's Graduation from DLI, Monterey, California, July 21- 23, 2011

After having joined the U.S. Army in January 2010, John graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey on July 21, 2011. He graduated at the head of his class (sitting at the head of the front row for the graduation).

It turned out that Lieutenant Colonel Christiansen and Walter (my oldest brother) were friends when they were both studying linguistics at Brigham Young University.

After graduation, the three of us visited the Monterey Aquarium (which Barbara and I had visited previously when we came to visit John). We continued visiting other places in the area for the next two days.

On July 23, John, Barbara, and I went to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, in Salinas, California (also near Monterey) to see motorcycle racing.

I guess Barbara and I must have worn John out with all our traveling. Here John is getting some shuteye at the Laguna Seca Raceway, July 23, 2011, 12:03 p.m.

If you look closely, you'll see many cyclists on the raceway in the distance. At Laguna Seca, July 23, 2011, 1:39 p.m.

After the races, we went to the Del Monte Shopping Center in Monterey and watched the movie "Captain America." They we ate at P.F. Chang's.

On July 24, Barbara and I drove from Monterey to the San Francisco Airport. We boarded JetBlue for Long Beach, then flew to the Salt Lake City International Airport. We were home in Orem by 7:00 p.m.
